image1538607896.jpgToday, I basically ran out of time writing some software - ran out of tine in as much as it had a bug which I couldn't find or fix. Somebody tried to help and I defensively said that I'd spend a little more time working in my code to sort it out... I soon gave in and he's suggestion worked within moments - I was not expecting that.

Then I heard a tweet from @PhilipMcCluskey saying when in doubt, choose humility. Fair play.

image292142056.jpgWhat's bothering me at the moment is that for air travel, if their is a serious problem in the air you have basically no chance of surviving a disaster. Sure, these are few and far between but for me once dead is quite enough. Traveling by sea provides you by law, since the sinking of the Titanic on 1912, passenger boats for every individual to use - which in case of a disaster gives you a fighting chance.

Point being, if you decide that dying would be pretty shitty, you have more chance dying in a freak air plane crash than on a boat, ship or cruise liner. You could argue that stranded in the middle of the ocean on a lifeboat would mean certain death, however I wonder if conditioning yourself for death or even having hope, chance is better than acute fear and imminent death - as it's possible to get rescued, especially if distress calls are made, not so in a plane. Conditioning ones self could be psychologically damaging however - but a fighting chance ulus what you get and surely that's our instinctive reaction - to try, to try and survive.

Now logically how would one factor this into practical everyday thought and action? Do we put out lives to chance or give ourselves a fighting chance but forfeit speed. Air travel is much faster but when it goes wrong, you die.

The other way of looking at it is that if you die in the air, you've really only got yourself to blame for putting yourself in a position where you will not have a fighting chance to survive. Perplexing.

you could also argue that you nay get s fighting chance to live in a air disaster - however it can be said that this is more unlikely than a sea mishap. Both suck pretty bad, don't get me wrong, but I think sea travel is safer.

image2102922773.jpgOk so I came across this guy in the tube as he entered the train. He sat down opposite me and after a few moments unbuttoned his top two black coat buttons and reached within it to pull out a large padded, rather protective, probably leather, kindle holder/brick/box. He shifted in his chair as he attempted to grab the one end, where he tried to unclip the front cover to reveal the screen, which he did not very easily(after the flap released and hung down),then he positioned, moved and folded that cover/flap behind the kindle and reclipped it. I sat there watching him do this, trying to get at whatever book he had been reading and thought to myself how I'd already be through the first paragraph- and then he slowly, looking rather dignified, lowered the device to just above his knees and started reading.

Finally.

This might sound all reasonable but it's not, and I'll tell you for why:

Why the hell would you want to add to the massive complexity(sacasm) of whipping the already slim, sleek, trim and easily handled kindle, for battling to open the cover/case just to get to the thing and contending with the added bulk(which must have attributed to half the devices size), only to go through the whole thing once you need to get off the tube(which you normally only do once you realise at the point at which the tube stops that you need to get going and then the frantic shuffling begins).

I don't know but that's just too much effort - maybe I'm just not relaxed enough or zen enough, I don't know...

Sure protection - it add protection...what from you reading it too hard? dropping it like you do when you drop your book every couple if seconds? Cmon, don't get a cover for your kindle that has straps, clips etc... that's just silly. don't make hour life difficult just to protect it, it's there to make your life easier, surely.

But don't worry, I'll get over this....it's just the efficiency or lack thereof in dealing with a practical application(ease of reading) that gets me - a voice in my head(I have those) leans over to me and gently whispers into my ear...get over it man.
