I decided to change things up a bit this morning. On Wednesday I ran into the office. Big woop right? I had loads of time because I didn’t go to the gym. It look me about 45mins.
Usually on gym days, because of the gym, I don’t have that spare time like I do on a Wednesday. I finish the gym and get home around 07:50 and leave for the trains around 08:00. My work commute is 2 short runs in between stations. Basically I run about 5mins to station 1, then I wait for the train, it takes me to station 2 and then I run about 7mins to work. That gets me into the office at around 08:50.
Today I thought to myself, if it only takes 45 mins to do the run, theoretically If I had a gym day and left the same time as i do for the trains but instead go on my run to work. I’d probably reach work at the same time! I’ve never really wanted to do this, partly because of fear of exhaustion and I’d not thought about the time it might take – always thought I’d take to long and not get to work on time. Not So! I overcame my irrational fear of exhaustion was was rubbish and I went anyway and boy it was certainly comparable to my between-stations running that I do. In fact, I fast faster doing it this way than by train! I guess all that waiting around and the indirect route I have to take to get to the right stations, all adds up unnecessary time to my journey.
And, I broke a few PRs. Moral of the story – don't let fear(of potential exhaustion in my case) limit your own expectations and goals. One of the things about running home in the winter(at the moment) is that it gets very dark and running in the complete darkness with just a little head torch is not as atmospheric and fun as in the daylight. So I think the inversion from night time runs home to morning runs into the office is the way I’ll do things no. What a change. What a relief.
