Today I our recent Australian arrival a bit of a tour of Greenwich. Was pretty cool as the whether was great, and we headed out on the boat from Westminster pier after a short detour around the houses of parliament. Headed off at about 10:15 and the journey to Grenwich which stopped off at Tower of London took about an hour in total and under the glorious blue skies, you could really appreciate the architecture, culture and history of this wonderful city.
First, we headed to see the Greenwich meridian line and found an onsite talk about the nature of the line, the observers and the actual royal observatory to be pretty insightful. Little did I know that the line had moved at least twice before settling at its current position. The other interesting facts I learnt was the the work wharf is actually an acronym for Warehouse At River Front. The other was the expression 'finging longitude' as a way to describe something near impossible or very difficult. I also learnt that the expression 'keep your eye on the ball' refers to the ball that rises and falls above the royal observatory indicating when to take GMT accurately.
Apart from this we also enjoyed a very typical 'fish 'n chips' in Greenwich which made things rather comical and festive:
We also headed off to the royal navy college which was my personal favourite as I seems to tend to envisage it as a working establishment in my mind and as I walk around. We also had a look at the 'painted hall':
A nice way to spend a Saturday and enjoy the glory of life, living and being young and able!
